1933- . US physicist, who in 1967
demonstrated, together with Abdus Salam, that
the weak nuclear force and the
electromagnetic force are variations of a
single underlying force, now called the
electroweak force. Weinberg and Salam shared
a Nobel prize with Sheldon Glashow in 1979.
Weinerg and Salam's theory involved the
prediction of a new interaction, the neutral
current (discovered in 1973), which required
the presence of charm (see quark).
